IDEAS AND COMMUNICATIONS TO INSPIRE

This area of the site is commentary, news reports and communications that are highly relevant to the ideals and direction of bioscience-bioethics.org. Check back here in the coming weeks for more additions.

THE PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE

The precautionary principle is an important modern concept for ecological, political and corporate management and effectively states that "Where there are threats of serious or irreversible environmental damage, lack of full scientific certainty should not be used as a reason for postponing measures to prevent environmental degradation". The precautionary measures should also be taken in public health. See viewpoint article Public Health and the Precautionary Principle (pdf format) by Steven Gilbert.

FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS

Linking phenotype to genotype - form to function - is the core of evolutionary biology. Gene function is crucial to understand how evolution developed new body forms. Modern biology has uncovered many of the intricate mysteries of cell communication, genetics and embryonic development. However, there is still much more to learn. See update article Functional Genomics Thickens the Biological Plot (pdf format) by Virginia Gewin.
